The Education System: Far From The Fountain of All KnowledgeThere are many countries in this World that would look on the UK as a shining example of how a national education system should work. However, these nations will not be presented with the full picture on how this system is actually working; as it enters the second decade of the 21st century. In short, the UK education system is not working as it should be. Tens of thousands of children are failing to reach minimal standards of knowledge and indeed, there are many that even struggle to learn how to read and write properly. The Government are doing very little to address this ongoing problem. Yes, in the typical Labour party style, they have thrown plenty of money at the problem over the past twelve years, but they are totally inept at managing to turn this bad trend around. Tests for 7 and 11 year olds was seen as the answer, but teachers have often expressed their exasperation over the fact that these tests are keeping students away from other vital areas of the curriculum. Children are not getting the careful level of education they should be and too much teaching time is spent in ensuring the children are able to complete the tests. As these tests have been used as an indicator of how well a school performs, teacher’s hands have been tied and this has made their job even more stressful than usual. It has to be time for the Government to wake up and smell the coffee. It does not take a genius to see that their policies have not been working and that something drastic must be incorporated soon, to turn this worrying trend around. |
